A cup of joe under the sign of Capricorn
When he accepted an invitation to join Capricornio Coffees, Edgard Bressani had two certainties: this was his opportunity to put his mark on a project of which he would be partner, and to contribute to bolster the production of quality coffees in the area around the Tropic of Capricorn, which crosses the São Paulo and Paraná states.
Well-known in the market because of his six years at the helm of O’Coffee, a specialty-coffee producer controlled by the SolPanamby group, Mr. Bressani joined business administrator José Antônio Rezende and agronomist and farmer Luiz Roberto Saldanha Rodrigues, who in 2015 founded Capricornio — a coffee exporter that “is not only a coffee exporter,” as Mr. Bressani makes the point of stressing.
With offices in Piraju, São Paulo, and Jacarezinho, Paraná, the company is specialized in exporting specialty coffees produced in the so-called coffee belt of the Tropic of Capricorn. The belt comprises two regions, Sorocabana, in São Paulo state, and the Pioneering North of Paraná, with 69 municipalities that produce coffee. This area of red earth and well-defined seasons is appropriate to coffee growing.
In the two regions, Mr. Bressani says, the production of arabica coffee is estimated at 6 million bags (of 60 kilograms) per harvest, of which 600,000 to 650,000 are high-quality beans. The origin is still little known abroad when it comes to Brazilian specialty coffees. But the trio of partners wants to change that.
