According to her, if there were any \u201cminor delay\u201d in the signing, this would not initially be \u201ca major problem.\u201d \u201cWhat matters to us is to close out 26 years of negotiations that are important for both sides,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"mc-column content-text active-extra-styles \" data-block-type=\"unstyled\" data-block-weight=\"49\" data-block-id=\"5\">\n<p class=\" content-text__container \" data-track-category=\"Link no Texto\" data-track-links=\"\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"Article links\">Padovan said Brazil managed to include important elements in the agreement compared with the 2019 negotiations, especially in the areas of government procurement and intellectual property. \u201cBrazil remains optimistic. We depend on the vote in the [European] Council, but we have signals that the idea is indeed to sign.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"mc-column content-text active-extra-styles \" data-block-type=\"unstyled\" data-block-weight=\"43\" data-block-id=\"7\">\n<p class=\" content-text__container \" data-track-category=\"Link no Texto\" data-track-links=\"\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"Article links\">That confidence stems in part from the fact that even if France and Poland oppose the agreement, it would still have a quorum for approval. There are, however, concerns over the safeguards that will be examined on Tuesday (16) by the European Parliament.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"mc-column content-text active-extra-styles \" data-block-type=\"unstyled\" data-block-weight=\"45\" data-block-id=\"8\">\n<p class=\" content-text__container \" data-track-category=\"Link no Texto\" data-track-links=\"\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"Article links\">In practice, the new safeguards allow for the temporary suspension of tariff preferences on agricultural imports from Mercosur countries if those imports harm European Union producers. \u201cI am familiar with the safeguards issue and I think it is something that deserves concern,\u201d the ambassador said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"mc-column content-text active-extra-styles \" data-block-type=\"unstyled\" data-block-weight=\"62\" data-block-id=\"9\">\n<p class=\" content-text__container \" data-track-category=\"Link no Texto\" data-track-links=\"\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"Article links\">President Luiz In\u00e1cio Lula da Silva is expected to travel to Foz do Igua\u00e7u on Friday (19) to attend the Mercosur and Associated States Summit the following day. There is also an expectation that the agreement will be signed on that date. It has yet to be confirmed whether the Brazilian president will hold bilateral meetings, as his schedule will be tight.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"mc-column content-text active-extra-styles \" data-block-type=\"unstyled\" data-block-weight=\"31\" data-block-id=\"10\">\n<p class=\" content-text__container \" data-track-category=\"Link no Texto\" data-track-links=\"\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"Article links\">According to the ambassador, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and European Council President Ant\u00f3nio Costa are expected to attend. Mercosur heads of state are also expected to be present.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"mc-column content-text active-extra-styles \" data-block-type=\"unstyled\" data-block-weight=\"56\" data-block-id=\"11\">\n<p class=\" content-text__container \" data-track-category=\"Link no Texto\" data-track-links=\"\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"Article links\">As reported by Valor, the Brazilian government sees no room for a months-long postponement of the signing of the Mercosur\u2013European Union agreement.
