The recovery in leadership, in terms of production volume, has been made possible by a series of measures implemented in recent years and accelerated under Gustavo Pimenta, 47, who completes his first year as the company\u2019s CEO on Wednesday (1).<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"wall protected-content\">\n<div class=\"mc-column content-text active-extra-styles \" data-block-type=\"unstyled\" data-block-weight=\"9\" data-block-id=\"3\">\n<p class=\" content-text__container \" data-track-category=\"Link no Texto\" data-track-links=\"\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"Article links\"><a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/valorinternational.globo.com\/business\/news\/2025\/10\/01\/vale-highlights-shareholder-gains-growth-ambitions-for-coming-years.ghtml\" data-mrf-link=\"https:\/\/valorinternational.globo.com\/business\/news\/2025\/10\/01\/vale-highlights-shareholder-gains-growth-ambitions-for-coming-years.ghtml\">Vale highlights shareholder gains, growth ambitions for coming years<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"mc-column content-text active-extra-styles \" data-block-type=\"unstyled\" data-block-weight=\"53\" data-block-id=\"4\">\n<p class=\" content-text__container \" data-track-category=\"Link no Texto\" data-track-links=\"\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"Article links\">\u201cWe have been working to show [investors] that the company has undergone a profound transformation in managing dams, risk, and safety,\u201d Mr. Pimenta told Valor. He was in Caraj\u00e1s, Par\u00e1, where Vale\u2019s main operations are located, attending the startup of the second furnace at the On\u00e7a Puma nickel producer in Ouril\u00e2ndia do Norte.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"mc-column content-text active-extra-styles \" data-block-type=\"unstyled\" data-block-weight=\"48\" data-block-id=\"5\">\n<p class=\" content-text__container \" data-track-category=\"Link no Texto\" data-track-links=\"\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"Article links\">Over the past 12 months at the helm, Mr. Pimenta has committed to other investments: the completed nickel expansion at Voisey\u2019s Bay in Canada, and three projects that expand iron ore production capacity in Par\u00e1 (the so-called +20), and in Vargem Grande and Capanema, both in Minas Gerais.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"mc-column content-text active-extra-styles \" data-block-type=\"unstyled\" data-block-weight=\"53\" data-block-id=\"6\">\n<p class=\" content-text__container \" data-track-category=\"Link no Texto\" data-track-links=\"\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"Article links\">Vale is thus maintaining its target of producing between 325 million and 335 million tonnes of iron ore this year, compared with 328 million tonnes in 2024. According to Mr. Pimenta, the company is meeting 100% of its targets across different products (iron ore, nickel, and copper), a result of greater operational stability.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"mc-column content-text active-extra-styles \" data-block-type=\"unstyled\" data-block-weight=\"46\" data-block-id=\"7\">\n<p class=\" content-text__container \" data-track-category=\"Link no Texto\" data-track-links=\"\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"Article links\">For years, investors had criticized Vale for failing to meet production goals, while uncertainties lingered over dam safety after the Brumadinho (2019) and Mariana (2015) disasters\u2014this will mark its tenth anniversary on November 5. Early in Mr. Pimenta\u2019s tenure, Vale reached a global settlement for Mariana.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"mc-column content-text active-extra-styles \" data-block-type=\"unstyled\" data-block-weight=\"32\" data-block-id=\"8\">\n<p class=\" content-text__container \" data-track-category=\"Link no Texto\" data-track-links=\"\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"Article links\">He also noted that, a month ago, the company achieved another milestone: it no longer has any tailings dams at level 3, the highest emergency classification under the National Mining Agency (ANM).<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"mc-column content-text active-extra-styles \" data-block-type=\"unstyled\" data-block-weight=\"55\" data-block-id=\"9\">\n<p class=\" content-text__container \" data-track-category=\"Link no Texto\" data-track-links=\"\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"Article links\">The gradual reduction of operational risks has improved market perception of the company, said Mr. Pimenta, who served as Vale\u2019s CFO before becoming CEO. In September, S&amp;P Global Ratings upgraded Vale\u2019s global credit rating from \u201cBBB-\u201d to \u201cBBB,\u201d with a stable outlook. The company also saw improvements in its ESG ratings from Sustainalytics and MSCI.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"mc-column content-text active-extra-styles \" data-block-type=\"unstyled\" data-block-weight=\"53\" data-block-id=\"10\">\n<p class=\" content-text__container \" data-track-category=\"Link no Texto\" data-track-links=\"\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"Article links\">These advances, according to Mr. Pimenta, allow Vale to broaden its shareholder base. Following the Brumadinho disaster, several international investors excluded the Brazilian miner from their portfolios. Some funds were barred from investing in the company. Now, he said, major asset managers overseeing nearly $1 trillion have regained confidence in investing in Vale.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"mc-column content-text active-extra-styles \" data-block-type=\"unstyled\" data-block-weight=\"67\" data-block-id=\"11\">\n<p class=\" content-text__container \" data-track-category=\"Link no Texto\" data-track-links=\"\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"Article links\">A survey by Valor Data shows that between September 30 of last year\u2014just before Mr. Pimenta\u2019s appointment\u2014and Tuesday (30), Vale\u2019s share performance lagged Anglo American\u2019s but outperformed Rio Tinto and BHP. Mr. Pimenta prefers another metric: total shareholder return (TSR). By this measure, from January through Monday (29), Vale delivered shareholders a 30.4% return, compared with 20% for BHP, 19% for FMG, and 18.9% for Rio Tinto.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"mc-column content-text active-extra-styles \" data-block-type=\"unstyled\" data-block-weight=\"54\" data-block-id=\"13\">\n<p class=\" content-text__container \" data-track-category=\"Link no Texto\" data-track-links=\"\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"Article links\">On the domestic front, where most of Vale\u2019s operations are located, challenges remain. From day one, one of Mr. Pimenta\u2019s priorities has been to improve relations with the company\u2019s stakeholders, including governments at all levels, communities, and clients. The succession process in 2024 was marked by controversy, with President Lula consistently pressing the company.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-track-category=\"multicontent\" data-track-action=\"ultimo chunk conteudo\" data-track-noninteraction=\"false\" data-track-scroll=\"view\">\n<div class=\"mc-column content-text active-extra-styles \" data-block-type=\"unstyled\" data-block-weight=\"80\" data-block-id=\"14\">\n<p class=\" content-text__container \" data-track-category=\"Link no Texto\" data-track-links=\"\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"Article links\">According to company insiders, Vale has opened channels in Bras\u00edlia, though frictions persist. The most recent was the failure to reach an agreement with the federal government to renew railway concessions. Valor has learned that renegotiation failed because of attempts to include the West-East Integration Railway (FIOL), a project linked to Bahia Minera\u00e7\u00e3o (Bamin).
