Because the move was driven by non-economic motives, he also dismisses any meaningful connection between Trump\u2019s actions and Brazil\u2019s membership in the BRICS bloc.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"mc-column content-text active-extra-styles \" data-block-type=\"unstyled\" data-block-weight=\"39\" data-block-id=\"4\">\n<p class=\" content-text__container \" data-track-category=\"Link no Texto\" data-track-links=\"\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"Article links\">\u201cObviously, economic reasoning doesn\u2019t explain the tariff hike. From an economic standpoint, the BRICS summit didn\u2019t promote a confrontational agenda. That\u2019s why I see a weak connection when people claim Trump\u2019s action reflects the rise of BRICS,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"mc-column content-text active-extra-styles \" data-block-type=\"unstyled\" data-block-weight=\"55\" data-block-id=\"5\">\n<p class=\" content-text__container \" data-track-category=\"Link no Texto\" data-track-links=\"\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"Article links\">Mr. Braga argues that sectors like the U.S. steel industry\u2014which imports semi-finished steel from Brazil as a key input\u2014could be natural allies in lobbying against the 50% tariff. He said the U.S. automotive industry may also have a vested interest in resisting the tariffs, given the potential for rising input costs that could undermine competitiveness.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"mc-column content-text active-extra-styles \" data-block-type=\"unstyled\" data-block-weight=\"60\" data-block-id=\"6\">\n<p class=\" content-text__container \" data-track-category=\"Link no Texto\" data-track-links=\"\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"Article links\">He criticized what he described as a shift in U.S. trade policy. While in the past the country was an architect of global trade governance, today it is \u201cundermining that very system,\u201d he said, referencing the weakening of the World Trade Organization (WTO)\u2014a trend that accelerated under Mr. Trump but was also seen during the Biden and Obama administrations.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"mc-column content-text active-extra-styles \" data-block-type=\"unstyled\" data-block-weight=\"46\" data-block-id=\"7\">\n<p class=\" content-text__container \" data-track-category=\"Link no Texto\" data-track-links=\"\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"Article links\">\u201cMr. Trump simply doesn\u2019t believe in multilateral solutions. Since January, WTO rules, such as the most-favored-nation principle, have been under attack, and he doesn\u2019t care. What will replace this system? The jungle and the law of the strongest. That will undoubtedly generate more tension,\u201d he warned.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"mc-column content-text active-extra-styles \" data-block-type=\"unstyled\" data-block-weight=\"45\" data-block-id=\"8\">\n<p class=\" content-text__container \" data-track-category=\"Link no Texto\" data-track-links=\"\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"Article links\">Depending on how Trump\u2019s tariff policy evolves toward China and the European Union, Mr. Braga sees potential for mounting domestic opposition and lobbying in the U.S. Congress. \u201cThis is also a path for Brazil, working with U.S. industries that depend on Brazilian imports,\u201d he suggested.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"mc-column content-text active-extra-styles \" data-block-type=\"unstyled\" data-block-weight=\"54\" data-block-id=\"9\">\n<p class=\" content-text__container \" data-track-category=\"Link no Texto\" data-track-links=\"\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"Article links\">Brazil is the second-largest exporter of steel to the U.S. While other countries could theoretically take over the market, Mr. Braga noted that supply disruptions and price hikes would be inevitable in the U.S. \u201cThat will reduce the competitiveness of American industry, and I guarantee they are not happy about these tariffs,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"mc-column content-text active-extra-styles \" data-block-type=\"unstyled\" data-block-weight=\"42\" data-block-id=\"10\">\n<p class=\" content-text__container \" data-track-category=\"Link no Texto\" data-track-links=\"\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"Article links\">Mr. Braga cautioned that retaliation would be the wrong move for Brazil and could cause more harm than good. While he acknowledged the legitimacy of Brazil\u2019s Economic Reciprocity Law, which allows for countermeasures, he believes it\u2019s not the right strategy for now.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"mc-column content-text active-extra-styles \" data-block-type=\"unstyled\" data-block-weight=\"28\" data-block-id=\"12\">\n<p class=\" content-text__container \" data-track-category=\"Link no Texto\" data-track-links=\"\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"Article links\">\u201cRetaliation definitely won\u2019t help. It will raise U.S. import costs and increase prices for Brazilian consumers\u2014both people and businesses. We need to stay calm and negotiate,\u201d he urged.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"mc-column content-text active-extra-styles \" data-block-type=\"unstyled\" data-block-weight=\"29\" data-block-id=\"13\">\n<p class=\" content-text__container \" data-track-category=\"Link no Texto\" data-track-links=\"\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"Article links\">Mr. Braga is also skeptical about any action at the WTO, arguing that although Brazil could win a case on legal grounds, the ruling would have no practical effect.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"mc-column content-text active-extra-styles \" data-block-type=\"unstyled\" data-block-weight=\"39\" data-block-id=\"14\">\n<p class=\" content-text__container \" data-track-category=\"Link no Texto\" data-track-links=\"\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"Article links\">\u201cBrazil could file a case at the WTO and would certainly win since the tariffs violate WTO rules. But the U.S. would appeal, and with the appellate system paralyzed, the case would remain in limbo without resolution,\u201d he explained.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"mc-column content-text active-extra-styles \" data-block-type=\"unstyled\" data-block-weight=\"32\" data-block-id=\"15\">\n<p class=\" content-text__container \" data-track-category=\"Link no Texto\" data-track-links=\"\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"Article links\">Although not optimistic about the negotiations, Mr. Braga noted there are areas where the U.S. remains interested in fostering positive relations with Brazil, citing the Alc\u00e2ntara space base partnership as one example.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"mc-column content-text active-extra-styles \" data-block-type=\"unstyled\" data-block-weight=\"50\" data-block-id=\"16\">\n<p class=\" content-text__container \" data-track-category=\"Link no Texto\" data-track-links=\"\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"Article links\">While he expects some economic impact from the 50% tariffs, Mr. Braga dismissed fears of a broader crisis. \u201cExports to the U.S. represent about 2% of Brazil\u2019s GDP. It\u2019s not a disaster, the world isn\u2019t ending, but there will definitely be consequences, especially for the most affected companies,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"mc-column content-text active-extra-styles \" data-block-type=\"unstyled\" data-block-weight=\"39\" data-block-id=\"17\">\n<p class=\" content-text__container \" data-track-category=\"Link no Texto\" data-track-links=\"\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"Article links\">Mr. Braga highlighted that the greater concern for Brazil\u2019s trade balance lies in the fact that exports to the U.S. are more heavily weighted toward manufactured goods. For agricultural products and commodities, Brazil can redirect exports to other markets.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-track-category=\"multicontent\" data-track-action=\"ultimo chunk conteudo\" data-track-noninteraction=\"false\" data-track-scroll=\"view\">\n<div class=\"mc-column content-text active-extra-styles \" data-block-type=\"unstyled\" data-block-weight=\"24\" data-block-id=\"18\">\n<p class=\" content-text__container \" data-track-category=\"Link no Texto\" data-track-links=\"\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"Article links\">\u201cFor manufactured goods, it\u2019s more complicated.
