This form of ethanol, known as second-generation or cellulosic ethanol, has long held promise but faced technical challenges in its production. The findings were published in Nature on Wednesday (12).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The researchers identified a metalloenzyme called CelOCE (Cellulose Oxidative Cleaving Enzyme), which improves cellulose conversion through a previously unknown mechanism. This enzyme addresses one of the sector\u2019s most pressing issues: the breakdown of cellulose biomass, a critical stage in fuel production.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to a report by Ag\u00eancia Fapesp, the research arm of the S\u00e3o Paulo State Research Support Fund, cellulose is the most abundant plant polymer on Earth but is notoriously resistant to degradation. In nature, its breakdown is slow and requires a complex enzyme system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With CelOCE, the team has pioneered a new mechanism\u2014oxidative cleavage\u2014that enhances the efficiency of cellulose decomposition. Currently, the efficiency of this process ranges between 60% and 70%, but CelOCE has the potential to increase that yield to 80%. Not only is the process more efficient, but it is also more sustainable, as it requires fewer and less complex enzymes than traditional methods.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAny improvement in yield is significant, especially when we\u2019re talking about hundreds of millions of tons of waste being converted,\u201d said M\u00e1rio Murakami, leader of the biocatalysis and synthetic biology research group, in an interview with Ag\u00eancia Fapesp.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The scientists note that CelOCE\u2019s role is not to directly produce the final ethanol product but to assist in the initial breakdown of cellulose.
